Each year, Australian nurses and other health professionals need to renew their registration. This yearly renewal also includes a requirement that we maintain our knowledge and skills in the areas in which we practice. This includes the need to maintain our currency by attending CPD of at least 20 hours/year. This CPD can be obtained through a variety of means, including face-face workshops, in-service training, conferences and online education. Many nurses are not good at keeping their CPD records up-to-date and often there is a last minute rush to update their resumes and portfolios. Many nurses are in denial about the need to ensure that they have completed their CPD requirements, hoping that they won’t be chosen to be audited by AHPRA This is like hoping that the ATO (tax department) won’t pick you for a tax audit! Some get away with it but many don’t.
So, if you are one of the many nurses who are starting to panic about their upcoming annual registration and you aren’t sure how to get organised, contact Kay for a FREE CPD documentation template which will help you sort through what you need to do and how to do it. And remember, you do need to maintain accurate records of your CPD – not doing so puts you in jeopardy of finding yourself in hot water if AHPRA asks you for proof of your CPD hours!
